From Nigeria to Brooklyn Chidi Eze’s Journey to the Bench — A Story of Perseverance and Justice

By Medical Visions for Peace (MVP)

Chidi Eze’s journey from a bustling home in Nigeria to the courtrooms of Brooklyn is a testament to perseverance, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to justice. A trial and appellate attorney with over two decades of experience, Eze has built a career defined by defending civil rights, protecting the vulnerable, and reshaping access to justice for New Yorkers facing life’s toughest legal battles.

Born in Nigeria, Chidi was one of eight siblings raised by a devoted mother and a father who worked as an electrical engineer. At the age of sixteen, he lost his father — a man who instilled in him the values of hard work, integrity, and the transformative power of education. Among his father’s greatest wishes was that Chidi would become an attorney, a vision that would ultimately shape his destiny.

“My father always believed in the life-changing power of education.”

Eze earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and began his professional life teaching mathematics at both high school and college levels. Yet, the call to law remained strong. He pursued legal studies at the University of Birmingham Law School in England, earning his law degree in 2000. Even as a student, he demonstrated leadership and advocacy, serving as the Students’ Representative on the University Senate.

In 2001, Eze arrived in Brooklyn with no family support and an uncertain future.

“I came to New York with no guarantee of success.”

Staying with friends, he worked tirelessly to rebuild his life, passing the New York State Bar Examination in 2002. By 2004, he launched his own law firm in Downtown Brooklyn — a firm that has since become a steadfast legal pillar for communities across New York City.

Today, Eze practices as a trial and appellate attorney specializing in Civil Rights, Employment Law, and Mortgage Foreclosure Defense. His career has been marked by high-profile litigation against major banks and powerful corporations, seeking justice for homeowners, workers, and marginalized communities.

In 2010, he was recognized by VerdictSearch Law Review as one of the highest jury award winners in New York State. His legal victories have been featured in Westlaw, the New York Daily News, the New York Post, and other prominent media outlets.

A defining moment in his career came with his pivotal role in advancing the Foreclosure Abuse Prevention Act (FAPA), signed into law by Governor Kathy Hochul on December 30, 2022 — legislation that has since protected thousands of Brooklyn homeowners from unjust foreclosures.

Eze has represented clients in over 100 Federal Court cases and more than 1,000 State Court cases, handling civil rights violations, false arrest, false imprisonment, malicious prosecution, police brutality, employment discrimination, and foreclosure defense — much of it performed pro bono. He has also briefed and argued over 50 trial and appellate cases at both State and Federal levels.

“My work has always been about fighting for equity and fairness. Everyone deserves justice, no matter their background or resources.”

Beyond the courtroom, Eze remains deeply committed to public service. He serves as a seasoned mediator, is a member of the New York State Judicial Committee, belongs to the Nigerian Bar Association (USA), and serves as Legal Adviser for OIUSA, supporting the Indigenous People of Ikwerre in Nigeria.

Active in civic and political life, he participates in the New York State Democratic Party and the Shirley Chisholm Democratic Club, and in 2018 ran for Brooklyn District Leader, underscoring his dedication to public service and community engagement.
In Flatbush, where he lives with his wife and two children, Eze continues to uplift his community through food and clothing drives, tenant–landlord mediation, housing consulting, and free notary services — earning a reputation as both a problem-solver and compassionate advocate.

A Historic Milestone
In January 2026, Chidi Eze was sworn in as a Civil Court Judge in New York, becoming the first Ikwerre, Nigeria-born individual to hold a judicial position in the United States — a moment of pride for the Ikwerre people, the Nigerian diaspora, and the broader community.

“This is a challenge, an obligation, and a sacred trust — to make Ikwerre people proud.”
— Hon. Chidi Eze
